“Amjad Khan and I struck a good friendship during Sholay. In fact, I wanted to play the role of Gabbar Singh and I told this to Ramesh Sippy (producer-director of the original Sholay),” Amitabh Bachchan said in a statement at the Le Meridien hotel in suburban Mumbai at a function held to reveal Gabbar’s Singh’s new look.It has been three days since the shooting of Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay remake has begun and the film is expected to be released in May 2007.
“30 years ago Gabbar Singh was the villian of Sholay, but today I think he’s the real hero. This film is the greatest challenge of my life,” Varma said.
“I am overwhelmed and embarrased to unveil this new look,” said Bachchan.

Sholay was a classic; so much so that hollywood acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur said that the history of Indian Cinema can be divided into sholay BC and Sholay AD. It was awarded the best film in 50 years by filmfare a couple of years ago. I doubt whether Ram Gopal Verma can match the original though I like Verma’s movies.
It is as difficult to make another sholay as it is to make you live up literally to your name, Gagan- Imagine youself as the sky.
I agree with you Hiren, the original Sholay is/was a classic and the new Sholay wouldn’t be able to match it or come even close to it. I am sure people will go and see the movie because of Amitabh playing Gabbar but it can’t create the same magic as the original Sholay did. I feel the same for new Don as well.
